1. Confirm that your exact phone supports eSIM
Do not rely only on the model family. Device variants sold by different carriers or in different markets can have different eSIM support. Open the phone's cellular or SIM settings and confirm that it offers an option to add an eSIM. The device should also be carrier-unlocked.
2. Decide what the eSIM needs to do
Most travel eSIMs are primarily for mobile data. If you need a local phone number, traditional SMS, or voice calling through the eSIM itself, verify that those features are explicitly included. Otherwise plan to keep your normal SIM active for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data.
3. Match data to the trip, not to a marketing label
Maps, messaging and ride-hailing use relatively little data compared with video, hotspot use and constant social uploads. A short city break can need far less data than a month of remote work. Choose a fixed allowance you can understand rather than assuming that a vague “unlimited” label is automatically better.
4. Check validity and activation timing
Validity answers how long the package can be used; activation rules answer when that clock begins. Some plans start when the eSIM first connects to a supported network, while others can have different supplier rules. Install early only when the plan allows it.
5. Buy while you still have stable Wi-Fi
Buying before departure gives you time to save the order number, installation information and support details. It also means you are not trying to compare plans from an airport terminal with poor Wi-Fi and a low battery.
