Start with your travel habits

A light traveler who mainly uses maps, WhatsApp, email, ride-hailing and occasional web browsing can often stay within a small allowance. Regular social-media use and photo uploads push the requirement higher, while video streaming and tethering are the biggest reasons to move into larger plans.

1–3GB: essential travel use

This range is best treated as a light-use budget. It can cover navigation, messaging, check-ins, email and occasional browsing when Wi-Fi handles heavier tasks. Disable automatic photo backup and app updates if you are trying to stretch a small plan.

5–10GB: everyday travel

For many travelers this is the comfortable middle. It gives more room for social apps, photos, browsing and occasional short video without constantly watching every megabyte. It is also the range where a short-to-medium trip can feel less restrictive.

20GB and above: heavy use

Choose a larger allowance if you expect frequent video, hotspot use, large uploads, remote work or a longer stay. Hotspot use deserves special attention because a laptop can consume data much faster than a phone.

A simple way to choose

Pick the smallest plan that comfortably covers your expected behavior, then leave some headroom. Our destination pages show the $5 starter first and keep larger fixed-data plans beside it so you can size up without searching a separate catalog.

Data-saving tip

Turn off automatic app updates, cloud-photo backup and high-quality video over mobile data before you travel. Those background tasks can consume more data than maps and messaging combined.
