Should data roaming be on for a travel eSIM?

Often yes. Many travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, so data roaming needs to be enabled on the travel eSIM line. The important part is keeping the travel eSIM and your home SIM settings separate.

Roaming on the travel line can be normal

Travel eSIM providers commonly use roaming agreements to connect you to a supported local network. Enabling data roaming on that travel line does not mean you must also allow roaming data on your home SIM.

Choose the data line explicitly

Set the travel eSIM as the preferred mobile-data line. If your phone offers automatic cellular-data switching, review that setting so it does not silently move data back to your home SIM.

If data still does not work

Check signal, data roaming, the selected data line and APN instructions. Restarting the phone or toggling airplane mode can also force a fresh network registration.
