PHONE NUMBER + DUAL SIM

Does an eSIM change your phone number?

No. Installing a travel eSIM does not replace or erase the phone number on your normal SIM. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the travel eSIM can handle mobile data while your usual line stays available for calls and SMS.

YOUR NUMBERStays the same

Your home number remains attached to your normal SIM or carrier eSIM.

TRAVEL eSIMOften data-only

A data-only plan may not include a separate number for carrier calls or SMS.

BEST SETUPSplit the jobs

Use the travel eSIM for data and decide separately whether to keep the home line active.

01

What actually changes when you add a travel eSIM?

Your phone gains another cellular line. Think of it as adding a second SIM rather than replacing the first one. The new line can be selected for cellular data, while your existing line can remain assigned to your normal phone number. The exact menus differ by iPhone and Android model, but the principle is the same: each line has its own role.

02

A data-only eSIM is not a replacement phone number

Most travel eSIMs are designed to provide internet access. If a plan is data-only, it should not be treated as a new mobile number for ordinary carrier calls or SMS. Apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, Telegram and Messenger can still use the travel eSIM’s data connection, but that is different from the eSIM having its own voice-and-text number.

03

Can you keep your normal number active abroad?

Often yes. If your phone supports dual SIM, you can usually leave the primary line enabled while choosing the travel eSIM as the cellular-data line. That can be useful when you still need calls, SMS or verification codes on your normal number. The important catch is that your home carrier controls roaming charges on that primary line, so keeping it enabled is not automatically free.

04

What about WhatsApp and iMessage?

Installing another eSIM does not automatically change the number registered with messaging apps. WhatsApp normally keeps the number you already verified unless you deliberately use its Change Number feature. iMessage and FaceTime can also continue using existing contact addresses, but review your Send & Receive settings after changing SIM configuration if anything looks different.

05

The safe travel setup

For many travelers, the clean setup is: travel eSIM selected for cellular data, data roaming enabled only where the travel plan requires it, data roaming disabled on the home line, and automatic cellular-data switching turned off unless you intentionally want the phone to fall back to the home carrier. If receiving calls or SMS on the home line matters, check your carrier’s roaming policy before departure.

FAQ

Quick answers before you travel.

The short version of the questions travelers usually discover at the last minute.

Will installing an eSIM delete my normal phone number?+

No. Adding a travel eSIM does not delete the number attached to your existing SIM or carrier eSIM.

Can I use my normal number and travel eSIM at the same time?+

On many dual-SIM-capable phones, yes. You can use the travel eSIM for data while keeping the normal line available for calls and texts.

Does every travel eSIM come with a phone number?+

No. Many travel plans are data-only. Only assume calls, SMS or a new number are included when the plan details explicitly say so.

Will WhatsApp change numbers when I install a travel eSIM?+

Normally no. WhatsApp keeps the number already registered to the account unless you deliberately change it inside WhatsApp.

Can leaving my home SIM on create roaming charges?+

It can. Charges depend on your home carrier and on how calls, texts and data are handled. Disable data roaming on the home line and check the carrier policy for voice and SMS.
